Black swirl tattoo on the wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single bold black swirl, shaped like a curved hook with a tapering tail, sits on the inner wrist and lower forearm. The design is made of solid black ink with smooth, tapering edges and no shading or fine detail. The plain pale skin and soft background keep the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your grandad never once signed a boat with his own name, Tom, which is why you'll find his work on half the sterns between Padstow and St Ives and nowhere in the parish records. He used a single sable brush and one flick of the wrist for the curl that finished every letter, a stroke he called the comma. The harbour master wanted it bigger on the Mary Ellen last spring, and I told him the comma only works if it's shy.

I've been going through his tins in the shed. In the bottom of the old enamel tin there's a hook of dried black paint gone brown at the edges, and tucked beside it a scrap of card in his capitals: TAIL GOES ON LAST, ALWAYS OFF THE WRIST, NEVER THE ELBOW. I laughed until I had to sit down on the upturned bucket. Forty-one years he painted that stroke and never once told me why the last bit had to taper away to nothing like that.

The Mary Ellen went out on Tuesday with a new name on her bow board, painted by Mr Pascoe's girl from Wadebridge, who has his wrist and none of his patience. I stood on the quay and watched the tail of the comma curl off the stern as the tide took her, and I understood the trick at last. A stroke that ends thin doesn't stop. It just carries on somewhere you can't see it.

I'm posting the old brush to you with this. Keep it dry, and don't let anyone tell you the tail is decoration. Love, Nan.
