A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Our Mags kept the kitchen window open an inch all winter, whatever the frost did to the bread. She said a spell wanted cold air to work in. I was nine and thought she was daft, and I told her so, and she handed me the poker and said, go on then, make something of that.

I tried for a week. I stood in the yard with my arms out like a scarecrow and shouted the words until the hens complained. What came out was a grey smudge like breath on glass, and it drifted off over the dyke and didn't come back. Mags only laughed and put the kettle on. She said the trick wasn't the shouting. It was thinking of the one thing that would never leave you, and not being embarrassed by it.

I passed over the dog I'd wanted and thought about Ginger instead. He was the wrong colour and too lazy to chase anything, but he was the one who sat on my feet while I did my sums. On the eighth night I stood at the window, breathed out, and said it properly. The light came out of my mouth like a lamp lit under water, and it took the shape of Ginger the way a cat sits when it has decided the room belongs to it. It crossed the frost on the sill without leaving a mark, then went round the side of the house and sat on Mags's back step.

Mags came out in her dressing gown and looked at it a long time. Then she said, that's a proper one, and she sounded almost sorry. Ginger had been buried under the plum tree since the spring, and I had not once let myself think of him as anything but the cat who was always there. She bent down and reached for its blue ear, and her hand went straight through, and she kept on stroking the air anyway.
