Colour tattoo of a wolf head split down the middle, blue on the left and red on the right, in a faceted geometric style on a person's chest.

Split wolf head on chest

Geometric · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head is shown in profile-facing view and split vertically, with the left half in shades of blue and teal and the right half in red and pink. The fur and features are built from angular, faceted planes with bold black outlines, and both eyes are rendered in bright turquoise. The tattoo is centred on bare skin with a soft, even light and a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My grandfather carved the wolf for the bow of the Dorcas the winter the herring came in so thick the nets split. He cut it down the middle with a chisel because he could not decide which of his two sons he liked less. The left half he painted the grey-blue of the sea off the Ness. The right he painted the red of the lifeboat house, the colour you're meant to see from a long way out.

Every spring Eli and Walter rowed out to the same ground and came back without speaking. The quay put money on which of them would go first. Nobody wanted to be the one who settled it. When the Dorcas went down in a northerly off the Ness, the figurehead came ashore on the tideline below the slipway, half buried in sand, and it was Walter who found it. Eli carried it up the steps on his shoulder without a word, and that was the first time in years they had walked the same way.

The wolf hangs now in the net loft, where the wind comes through the slats. In the mornings the blue eye catches the light first and the red one keeps the shadow. I take my tea at the window and look at them in turn, the way you would check two men who are both still alive and both certain they were right.
