Blue rose and pink ribbon on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A blue rose with soft shading sits at the top of the design, with a green thorned stem running down the forearm. A pink ribbon twists around the stem, with a small bud and green leaves along it. The shading is smooth and the colours are rendered with a realistic, blended finish against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The blue rose had been growing behind the potting shed at Hollins Walk for eleven years before anyone in the village was sure it was a rose at all. Old Mr Tamsin had raised it from a seedling he found in a hedge bottom, and he never gave it a name, only a number on a tin tag that the rain had nearly bleached away. When I took over the glasshouses that spring, the tag was in my coat pocket and the bush was throwing up thorned canes as thick as my thumb.

On the first Saturday in June a woman came up the gravel path with a pink satin ribbon wound round her wrist like a bracelet. She asked whether the blue rose was for sale. I said it wasn't, and she nodded as though she had expected that, then asked if she could tie something to it anyway. I told her the bush was not mine to refuse. She knotted the ribbon twice around the lowest cane, pulled it snug, and then stood with her palm flat against the bark for longer than was polite.

The next morning a side shoot had opened into a bloom a shade bluer than the last, and the leaves had gone a green so bright they looked wet. I cut the ribbon free, meaning to put it in a drawer, and found I could not. I left it where it was. By August the satin had faded to the colour of sugared almonds, and the rose had put out three more flowers, each one pale as skimmed milk. The tin tag is still on its hook in the shed, and I have never written a name on it.
