Blue rose on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a large rose tattooed on the inner forearm, with the bloom viewed from slightly above. The petals are shaded in several tones of blue with soft gradients and highlights that give the flower volume. The rose sits centrally on the arm against a dark chair and a wooden floor.

The snow had buried the north road by the third day, and Marit, who kept the inn at the top of the pass, stopped asking her guests what they wanted and simply put bread on the table. There were six of them that week: two carters, a priest with a cough, a woman who would not give her name, and a boy who came in with frost in his eyebrows and sat by the stove without speaking.

The old people in the valley said the blue rose would grow only in the yard of a house that had kept its door open through a winter. Nobody had seen one bloom since Marit's grandmother was a girl. Her husband laughed at the idea, but he went out each morning with a shovel and cleared the path to the well all the same.
On the ninth night the boy asked for a candle and went out into the yard. Marit followed him with a lantern and found him kneeling in the drift beside the old bush that had never flowered, brushing snow from its stems with his bare hands. Under the snow a single bud had opened, blue as a river under ice, its petals edged in a darker colour that ran down like cold water.
He did not pick it. He said it was for whoever came up the pass next, and then he went back inside, lay down by the stove, and slept until the thaw.
