Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Left: Darth Vader, Yoda, a stormtrooper and Boba Fett are stacked vertically on the forearm, each with bold black outlines and flat colour fills, with a grey Vader and a yellow-green Yoda. Right: Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur are stacked in the same way on a forearm, with bold outlines and bright flat colour. Both designs are shown against plain skin and a patterned background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tuesday. The lodgers have started stacking again, and this time there are two teams, which the landing cannot bear. On the left, Kettle the bounty hunter in his rust-orange helmet took the bottom step, with the two white-armoured gentlemen from the third floor balanced on his back. Oolan, the old green fellow with the walking stick, climbed up next, complaining about his knees, and Mr Varrin in his black helmet crowned the whole arrangement, breathing like a kettle at the boil.

On the right, Mossy, the bulky green toad with a bud on his back, was the foundation, and he had Cinder the flame-tailed lizard on his shoulders, then Shellby the blue turtle, and last Sparks, the small yellow one with the zigzag tail, who shouted that he was the only one with proper balance. Cinder kept his tail lit like a gas ring, which I have told him about, and the curtains are singed at the hem.

Both stacks wobbled at once when Mr Varrin sneezed. Sparks squeaked, Shellby withdrew into his shell, and the whole lot came down the staircase in a clatter that woke the Pells' cat and two commercial travellers. Nobody was hurt except Kettle's dignity, and Oolan, who said he had seen worse in a swamp.

I have written the damages on the back of the bill: one banister, two helmets dented, one toad's bud returned to the pantry. I charged them extra for the view. They have agreed to pay, and tomorrow they mean to try again from the bottom up, which is the only sensible way to climb anything.
