Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of the BB-8 droid from Star Wars, with its white and grey dome head, antenna and camera lens details above a large orange spherical body. The linework is bold and black, with soft shading and blended orange and red tones giving the body a rounded, dimensional look. It sits on the calf and is photographed against a light fabric background.

The thing came over the sea wall the morning after the spring tide, rolling end over end like a dropped orange, and it stopped against my boots with a chirp that sounded deeply put out. Dad said it was the wrong shape for a buoy. I said it was the wrong shape for anything.

We dried it by the range for two days, wiping salt from its seams with a tea towel while its dome head swivelled to follow the kettle. Its single lens clicked whenever I spoke, and when I dropped a spoon it gave a rising whistle, three notes and then a fourth that was almost a question. By Thursday I had learned to answer it with the spoon. Nobody on Skerrig had ever owned a machine that argued back.

On Friday it rolled itself to the door and waited, rocking against the frame until I opened it. It led me along the shore road to the north point, where the old ferry slip has been choked with weed since before I was born, and it stopped at the edge where the water turned green and deep. It chirped at the empty sea. Then it turned its lens to me and whistled the question again.

I told it the ferry came on Tuesdays and that nobody had waved from that slip in twenty years. It made a low hum and rolled back the way we had come, orange body wobbling over the stones. Halfway up the path it stopped, turned its lens back towards the slip, and I swear it waited for me to wave before it carried on.
