Bow and banner tattoo on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A soft-focus photograph of a person in a bath, with one hand resting on their knee. A tattoo on the thigh shows an animal head in a teal scalloped frame, topped by a large pink bow and a banner reading MISS. The linework is dark and the colours are pastel, with yellow, pink and teal fills, and the design sits in the lower right of the frame.

The rabbit had been in the bread bin since Tuesday, and Maureen Pyle had decided not to mention it to the skipper until the Cromarty light was in sight. She scraped the last of the porridge oats into the pan and kept one eye on the hatch. Forty hours out of Hull and the galley was the only warm place aboard, which was presumably why the thing had chosen it.

It was yellow, not sandy, a colour no rabbit had any business being, with a pink satin bow tied at one ear and a teal scalloped frame that looked nicked from a chapel rummage sale. Across the bottom ran a ribbon reading MISS. Nobody on the Brightwater had lost a rabbit. Nobody had lost anything but sleep since the gale off Dogger. Maureen had found it wedged behind the flour sacks, sitting upright as a bishop and watching her with the calm of something that had survived worse than a cook.
Dougie came down for his fry-up with salt in his beard and asked what she was feeding the creature. She said it could have the crusts. He said the lads would have it in the stew by Friday. She said the lads would have to get past her first, and he laughed the way men laughed when they had decided not to argue with a woman holding a ladle.
By the time the harbour lamps showed grey through the spray, the bow had come loose and the rabbit was asleep on the locker lid, one paw resting on the word of its ribbon. Maureen wrote in the log that the stores were short two loaves and one passenger. She did not write a name, because she had not yet decided what to call the one thing aboard that nobody had come looking for.
