Pastel colour tattoo of a pink bow, a MISS banner and a cream animal in a teal oval frame on a thigh, with a hand resting on the knee.

Pastel bow and banner tattoo on a thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A soft-focus photograph of a person submerged in water, with one hand resting on their knee. A pastel tattoo on the thigh shows a pink bow above a ribbon banner reading MISS, with a cream figure inside a teal oval frame edged in yellow scallops. The lines are clean and the colour is flat and washed out, with a pink, dreamy filter over the whole image.

Hold still, Pim, I haven't got to the bit with the ribbon yet. Right. Winnie Hale was twelve when she painted the lamb on the Mary Ellen's bow, set inside a round porthole she'd cut from a tin lid and ringed with yellow scallops like a Sunday pie crust. The banner under it said MISS because the captain had promised her the ship would carry her mother's name, and then he named it after his own.

Off the Horn the paint began to lift in the salt. Tobias, the youngest hand, was lowered over the bow on a bosun's chair in a gale, with a pot of teal and a brush made from an old shaving-brush head. He sat in that chair with rain running down his collar and worked the scallops back in one at a time, humming the hymn his nan sang over the washing.

When the sun finally came up on the sixth morning, the lamb's eye had come out crooked and the bow had faded to a pink nobody could put a name to. The captain never looked at the bow again. Winnie did. Every dawn she stood on the forecastle, shading her eyes, and said the lamb had made it round the Horn, which was more than most of us could claim.

So when you see that ship in a bottle behind the bar at the Pig and Whistle, look at her bow. Miss, it says. Not missing. Miss, as in a girl who would not be told.
