The sweet peas have got away from me again. I went down to the far bed this morning with twine in my apron pocket and found the tall ones leaning over the path like drunk guests, so I tied them back with the blue ribbon you left on the shed hook. Your grandfather would have said a bow is no use on a stake. He was wrong about that, as he was about most things that didn't grow in straight lines.

Mrs Pickering from the next plot came round to ask whether you were coming for the harvest supper. I told her you were at sea now, which she took to mean you had drowned, and she has been praying for you at the chapel every Sunday since. I haven't corrected her. It seemed unkind to take away a woman's prayers.

The shed key is under the flowerpot with the cracked rim, same as always. Take the good secateurs, not the rusty pair. If you find yourself somewhere with ground that won't take a seed, tie a knot in something small and think of the lane behind the church, where the ribbon used to flutter from the gate.
