The wasps have declared war on the plum tree again, and I have declared war on Uncle Ferris, who turned up at the allotment gate yesterday with a ham under one arm like a stolen cricket bat. It was wrapped in a tea towel, and his knuckles were already greasy from carrying it.

We sat on the upturned crate under the runner beans while he cut the ham with his penknife, the one with the bottle opener he has never once used. Two slices of bread from Mrs Okafor's bakery, still warm enough to fog the paper. A wedge of Cheddar the colour of a marigold, sweating gently in the sun. He made four sandwiches, one for each of us and one he said was for the magpie that has been eyeing the shed roof since Easter.

The magpie got the crust, as magpies do. Ferris got the last of the ham, slid it onto his bread with his thumb, then stopped and looked at his hand for a long while. 'Four fingers,' he said, 'and not one of them spare.' Then he flexed the hand over the bean rows as if he were about to knock on a door.

I've told him the beans will want picking on Thursday. He says he'll bring the mustard. Come up at the weekend and bring your own knife, because I am not lending him mine again.
