Two crown tattoos on clasped hands
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, each showing a small black crown tattoo on the back of the hand. The crown on the left is drawn with a dotted, bead-like outline and the one on the right has finer linework with some shading. The ink is black only, set against skin and watches in warm, softly lit tones.

Dougal lost the bet on a wet Tuesday, which was how he came to owe Nell Ferris a crown. The wager had been made over a pint at the Coronation Arms: whoever could keep the allotment shed padlock closed longest would be named king of the plot until the frost. Nell had kept the key in her coat for nine days and never once looked at it. Dougal had lasted six.

She wanted it done with a pin and a bottle of ink from the stationer on Mill Lane, and she wanted beads. "A proper crown has pearls," she said, and she dotted the outline, round and even, while he held still and tried not to laugh at the tickle. It took her an afternoon. The ink went blue-black in the cold and she kept blowing on it to hurry it along.
Dougal had other ideas. He had spent two winters at the night class in the Co-op hall learning to engrave silver, and his crown came out finer, with thin hatching down one side where the light would fall if the hand was turned. He drew it freehand on the back of a seed packet three times over, until the arches matched the ones on the old penny he kept in his tin.
They never agreed which crown was the true one. Some evenings the shed gate sticks and they sit on the bench with their hands knotted together, the beaded crown pressed against the engraved one, and the wristwatch ticks between them like a clerk counting out the rent. Nell says the throne is hers by right of the dots. Dougal says the shading proves it. Neither moves to let go.
