Steak cut tattoo on a finger
Hand · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a steak cut sits on the side of a finger on a hand held up to the camera. The design uses a dark outline with solid red and pink fill, with paler marbling lines inside the meat. The background is plain and dark, with a metal tattoo machine visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The frost has held the yard for nine days and the beasts are bedded down in the bottom barn with straw banked high against the wall. Dad sold the white-blazed heifer to Aldridge at Michaelmas and he has not said her name since. On Thursday I took a thick-cut rump steak from the cold room, the last of the autumn beef, and seared it in the iron pan the way Mam did, hot and fast, salt and nothing else, and I thought of you at that sink in the rented flat with your tins of beans lined up on the windowsill.
Mrs Pryce came up the lane on Saturday with a basket and asked if we had any stewing beef going spare. I told her the butcher in Ludlow would have cheaper, and she laughed and said nobody was ever cheaper than a farm, love, then bought the shin off me anyway. She paid in coins from a purse with a broken clasp. She remembered your name from the school nativity, the one where you were the donkey and kicked the wise man into the crib.
The thaw is due Tuesday, the radio says, though the radio says a lot of things. If it comes, I will drive the Land Rover down to the river field and see whether the ice has cracked on the trough. I am writing this at the kitchen table with the range ticking, and when I finish I am going to cut a slice of the good bread and eat it standing up, the way you always said a letter should be read, quick and hungry.
Come home for the lambing if you can. Bring the donkey story. I want to hear the bit you left out.
Your sister, Nell
