Small cartoon icons tattooed across fingers

Hand · Colour · Photo

Both hands are shown palm down with a small cartoon-style tattoo on each finger. The motifs include a red heart, an orange star, a purple bell-like shape, a green hat, a blue crescent moon, an orange cloud or sun shape and a rainbow, with a red balloon on the outer finger of the right hand. The shapes have bold, flat colour fills with simple dark outlines against plain, softly lit skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

There was a village at the bottom of the valley where the river bent twice, and a clockmaker's widow named Hester Pell who taught the children their letters with a cocoa tin of painted tokens. Each token was a small picture: a red heart, an orange star, a bell, a green hat, a blue crescent moon, a cloud, a rainbow. On Fridays she let each child choose one to keep for the week.

Tobias Rook chose the balloon. He was the smallest boy in the school and the only one who asked what it was for. Hester said it was for holding on to something you did not want to lose, and he thought about that all week, turning it over in his pocket until the paint wore away at the corners.

Years later the school was shut, the children were grown and scattered to Leeds and Bristol and the coast, and a reunion was called in the old hall. There were urns of weak tea and a trestle of sandwiches curling at the edges. Tobias came late. The cocoa tin sat on the table with Hester's name still written on its lid, though Hester had been dead a long while.

He opened it. Every token was there except the balloon, and in its place lay a folded note in her cramped hand: you have had long enough. He laughed until he had to sit down. Then he walked out into the car park and let the rainbow and the moon go to the wind, watching them rise over the roofs until he could no longer tell which was which.
