A small brown bird with a red underside and an orange beak flies to the right, with three black musical notes above it. The bird is outlined in bold black linework, with brown shading on its wings and body and a dark tail. The tattoo sits on a pale forearm against a plain brown background, with the sleeve of a white top visible at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are fitting the last gut string when the swallow lands on the sill, the same brown bird that has come every morning since the spring rains, its red breast puffed against the cold. Your master, Diodoros, says a bird that sings in a workshop steals the tone from the wood. You say nothing. You have already noticed that the bird's whistle hangs on a note the lyre cannot quite reach, a bright sliver between the fourth and fifth strings.

For nine days you work the bridge a hair's breadth higher, paring cedar with a bronze knife until the shavings curl like the bird's tail feathers. Each morning the swallow waits with its head cocked, and each morning you play the scale for it. It answers with a note the lyre has never held before. Diodoros hears it on the tenth day and goes pale. He takes the instrument from your hands, strikes the high string, and the note splits like a dropped jug.

You stand at the window while he shouts about the price of tortoiseshell and the gods who punish greed. Outside, the swallow lifts from the sill and circles above the agora. Three clear notes drift up from the street, a flute boy practising in the shade of the colonnade, pitched exactly where you set the bridge.
