California state outline with night sky and poppies
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the outline of California filled with three stacked scenes: a starry Milky Way sky at the top, grey snow-capped mountains in the middle and a golden field with orange California poppies at the base. The shading is soft and blended in the sky and mountains, while the poppies are rendered in bold, saturated orange, all contained within a black outline. Dark tones in the sky and peaks sit against warm yellows and oranges in the lower half, set on bare skin across the upper back.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the candle, for the draught off the scriptorium has been wicked since Candlemas. You have all walked past the map in the cloister passage, the long one with the brown hills and the sea on the left. Brother Piers says it shows a country that never existed. He is wrong, and I will tell you how I know.

Her name was Inés Carrasco, and she came up the mule track in the autumn the east wall fell into the orchard. She carried a folded sheet of vellum and a tin of pigments the colour of a fox's coat. The prior gave her a cell beside the bakehouse because she would not leave until she had been fed, and for three weeks she drew by the ovens while the brothers went round her like water round a stone. When she unrolled it, the coast was there, and the long spine of the ridge, and the valley with its gold grass laid down like a hand on a table.
The prior asked her where the towns were, and where the roads ran between them. She said towns were for men who counted them, and roads were only the marks men made to get somewhere they had already seen. She had painted the high country as snow beneath a sky so thick with stars it looked spilled, and she had drawn the poppies burning across the foothills in the same orange as the sunset she'd watched from the pass.
The prior hung it in the passage where it hangs now. In April, when the poppies come up in the abbey's own field, Brother Piers goes out to look at them every morning, and I have never once seen him call them a lie.
