Small camera tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a vintage single lens reflex camera sits on the ankle, viewed from the side with the lens facing left. The design uses dark outlines with grey shading on the lens barrel, top plate and body. The skin is pale with a slight warm flush, set against white bedding in a simple indoor composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Ansel Pike had the shutter fixed on a Tuesday, and by the Friday the whole of Cable Row knew the camera in his window would take a picture of anything that lied to it. That was the tale, anyway, and Ansel told it plainly to anyone who came in for a repair and stayed to listen.

He said it had belonged to a night photographer who walked the city after the trams stopped. She photographed lamplighters, bakers' carts and drunk men singing outside the Lantern Hall, and she never developed a frame in daylight. When she died, her nephew sold the camera for the price of a pint, and Ansel had been paying for that pint ever since.

He loaded a fresh roll, wound it on and aimed the lens at the gas lamp across the cobbles. The shutter clicked. Nothing came out of the back but a square of black card, and in one corner, very small, a second lamp burned where none stood. "That one's the lie," he said. "Somebody on this street has been telling it to themselves."

A woman with wet hair came in that night wanting her boots soled, and she saw the card and went quiet. Ansel did not ask her name. He handed her the camera and said to point it at the river after midnight, and it would show her what she had been carrying. She went out into the rain with it under her coat, and the lamps along the Broomielaw flickered as she passed, the way lamps do for people who are about to be honest.
