Cancer zodiac symbol line drawing
Black and grey · Flash
A simple black linework drawing of the Cancer zodiac symbol, two open circles joined by two curved strokes, centred within a thin square border. The lines are even and unshaded, with slight tapering at the ends. The pale, veined stone-like background is cream with pink tones, and the drawing sits in the middle of the frame with generous margins.

The showman's daughter, Nell Fenwick, had carried the tin bucket from Whitby to Hexham and back again, and by the time the fair pitched on the sands at Morecambe the crab inside it had grown too large to be called a pet. Her father said it was bad luck to keep anything that could not fit through the caravan door. Nell said it could fit, if you asked it nicely.

Every night the lamps came on along the promenade, and every night a small grey man in a bowler sat in the fortune booth, reading palms for pennies. He never looked at the crab. He only ever asked the same question: which of the two circles was the sun and which was the moon? Nell did not know. She had only ever seen the crab's two black eyes, set apart like twin moons, and the curved legs that drew in whenever the lamps flared.
On the last night of the season the tide came in fast across the flats. The bowler man stood, folded his cards, and walked straight into the water, and the crab, which had never once walked toward anything, followed him. Nell ran to the edge with the empty bucket. She saw two pale rings of foam spreading on the wet sand, one and then the other, joined by a long curving wake that tapered to nothing at each end.
Her father bought a new bucket in Blackpool, and nobody at the fair ever asked again which circle was which. Nell kept the old one. Some nights, when the lamps were out, she turned it upside down on the caravan step and listened for claws that did not come.
