The greenhouse glass had gone milky with summer, and Marguerite Fenwick swore the two plants at the back were trying to outgrow the roof. She had raised them from seed in the spring, one from her brother's old packet and one from a cutting she had taken without asking from the allotment next door, and now they stood taller than her shoulder, their serrated leaves fanning out like the hands of a crowd at a funeral that had decided to clap instead.

She cut the right-hand one on the first cold morning, worked the flowers loose over newspaper on the kitchen table, and left the left-hand plant standing alone in the glass. It was still reaching when the frost came. She decided, with the scissors in one hand and a cup of tea going cold in the other, that she would let it reach until it found something worth touching.
