Capricorn zodiac symbol and script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bold solid black Capricorn zodiac symbol sits above the word Capricorn written in a thin cursive script. The symbol has a soft grey shadow along one edge, giving it a slight raised look. The tattoo is centred on the forearm against plain skin, with a blurred background.

I was nine and the only one brave enough to bring it bread. It ate from my palm with lips as cold as the sea and looked at me the way the vicar looks at a hymn he means to finish. Mrs Pascoe at the chandlery said it wanted high ground, that they always did, and by the second week the whole street had a view on which crag it would climb to.
It went up the cliff path at dawn on the last Sunday in October, placing each hoof where the slate broke so the stones never rattled. We watched from the harbour until it was a dark notch against the sky, then a grey speck at the very top with its tail trailing into cloud like a kite string, and then nothing at all.
Years later I found its track again, pressed into the slate of the old lighthouse steps: a deep, neat horseshoe with a fishtail smudged behind it, as if the sea had tried to follow and given up. I stood there a long while with the wind in my collar, then went home and told my father the goat had gone to the high ground, which was the only true thing I had ever known about it.
