Cartoon animal on the top of a foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon animal character with large red ears, a bulbous red-rimmed eye, a pig-like snout and a wide toothy mouth is tattooed on the top of a foot. The bold black outlines and flat, graduated shading give it a classic cartoon look, with a blue wash behind the head and a green and yellow body. The design fills the frame, with the foot's skin visible around the edges against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mortimer had been falling off the same cliff for eleven years, and he was tired of it. Every Saturday the projectionist at the Gilt Lantern in Harrowby Bay ran the reel, and every Saturday the little hound with the red ears would step off the painted ledge, hang in the blue air for a moment with his bulging eye swivelling towards the audience, and then drop out of the frame like a dropped purse. Nobody ever asked him how he felt about it. The ink was thick and the cels were cheap.

On the Saturday in question, the rain came in sideways off the estuary and the projector jammed on frame forty-one. Mortimer found himself suspended with one foot on nothing, staring at the stalls. A girl in a yellow mac was eating boiled sweets from a paper bag and watching him with the flat patience of a bored heron. "You're meant to fall," she said. "Go on. Everyone likes the bit where you fall."

"I have a contract," said Mortimer. "It's in pencil, but it's binding."

She offered him a boiled sweet. He took it, because the paint was stuck to his tongue anyway, and the sugar was the first real taste he'd had in years. Behind the screen, the reel groaned and the lamp hissed, and somewhere a man swore in Portuguese and kicked a bucket.

Then the frame slid, the cliff tilted, and Mortimer did what he had never once done in eleven years of Saturdays. He stepped sideways onto the blue wash of the sky, bent his long grey legs, and walked off the edge of the picture into the velvet dark of the cinema, with the sweet still cracking between his teeth. The girl in the yellow mac clapped twice. The screen stayed empty, and for the first time anyone could remember, the audience waited for the next picture.
