The bear is back on the windowsill where your nan kept the geraniums, and I have stopped pretending I didn't pick him out of the skip behind the Co-op. His left ear was hanging off by a thread of brown wool, so I sat on the kerb with a needle from the emergency kit in the glovebox and mended it while a red admiral kept landing on my knee, as if it wanted a fare.

You will say I am making things up. Maybe I am. The butterfly followed us the whole length of Mill Road that morning, bobbing a foot ahead of the pram you were too big for even then, and Rita from number nine swore it was the same one that had sat on her washing line in July. She said butterflies remember people who feed them. I told her we had nothing to feed it but a crust of toast.

Anyway, the reason I'm writing: the hospital rang on Tuesday to say your mum is through the worst of it, and they want one of us there at visiting hours, not both. I've said you go. I'll mind the bear. He's been sitting in the kitchen window watching the car park, which is more than I've managed since Easter.

Take him the good blanket, the blue one, and tell her the butterfly came back. She'll know what I mean.
