Cartoon cat in tiger costume on forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon cat character wearing an orange hood with black tiger stripes, a red bow and a matching striped outfit, with a tail curling up on the right. The outlines are bold and even, and the flat fills of orange, red, white and black are solid with little visible shading. The design sits centred on a pale arm against a dark background.

Mrs Okafor from flat fourteen had been banging on the lift doors for ten minutes before Dessie finally pried the grille open with a biro. The lift was stuck between the ninth and tenth floors, and the only company inside was a cardboard box holding a tiger costume, two sizes too big for her grandson.

Dessie had promised Nan he'd have it at the community hall by six. Tyrone, who was seven and had decided he was going as a cat, would not accept a tiger instead. "It's the same thing," Dessie said. "A cat with stripes." Tyrone pointed at the hood and explained, slowly, that a cat with stripes was a tiger, and tigers did not wear bows.
Upstairs, the lift rattled and dropped six inches, then held. Dessie climbed out through the gap with the box under one arm and a torch in his teeth. By the time he reached the hall, Tyrone had already clipped a red bow from his sister's hair onto the orange hood, and he was standing very straight in the middle of the floor, one paw raised, looking like he had won something.
He took the fancy dress prize at quarter past seven, a tin of shortbread from the raffle table. Nobody asked which animal it was meant to be. On the bus home Tyrone kept the tail wrapped round his wrist, curled up like a question, and Dessie decided that was answer enough.
