Tigger bouncing among autumn leaves on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows Tigger mid-bounce with arms outstretched, a pink nose and an open smile, surrounded by falling leaves and a pile of leaves at his feet. The cartoon-style outlines are bold and clean, with the orange and black stripes and white belly rendered in flat fills and simple shading. The design sits on the lower leg against plain skin, with the subject centred and the image taken straight on.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Prior Anselm, I write with the leaves still falling in the orchard and the Brothers in a state I can only call bouncing. On Tuesday, during Sext, a striped creature came over the wall by the cider press, landed in the pile we had raked for compost, and announced himself as Tigger. He has no other name, or none he would stop long enough to give.

Brother Osric tried to rebuke him with the Rule. Tigger sat on the bench, listened politely to the chapter on humility, then leapt onto the lectern, pink nose wrinkled with delight, and bounced three times on the open psalter. The leaves rose around him like a second congregation. By the third bounce even the old cellarer was tapping his sandal.

Here is my difficulty. Vespers has been sung by nine voices at most since the Michaelmas storms, and tonight we were eleven, with the creature in the middle, arms flung wide, shouting Alleluia in a voice like a kettle. I confess I laughed so hard I spilled the wine meant for the altar. Brother Osric says it is a temptation sent to test us. I think God, who made the autumn, may have a sense of humour.

He leaves at first light, he says, to bounce through the next valley. I asked him to wait for your blessing. He said bouncing was the only blessing he knew, then bounced up the cloister stair and out of sight. Pray for us, and send a second copy of the Rule with larger pages. Your devoted brother in Christ, Matthias.
