Mrs Pryce had baked for the Tylorstown lamp room since the winter the coal dust got into everything, and she had never once sent up a late tray. So when a white cat in a biscuit-brown hood turned up on her back step one February morning, she let it in out of the sleet and fed it the burnt ends from the tin.

It did not beg. It sat on the flour sacks with its paws tucked under, a pink bow the size of a teacup tied over one ear, and watched her ice the buns with the grave look of a deputy checking timber. When her son Gwyn came in from the early shift, black to the elbows, he stopped dead. "That's the cat that sits on the lift gate," he said. "Nobody's ever managed to shift it."
After that the cat came every morning. Mrs Pryce wrapped one pink cupcake with two red cherries in greaseproof paper, and the cat carried it down the lane in its teeth, quite unhurried, and left it on the bench where the older men took their breaks. Nobody could say who had started the custom, only that the men who ate a cherry before the cage went down came up again with their tempers sweet. Old Dai Rees swore by it, and he was not a man given to swearing.
The February the roof came down on the number three level, the cat did not come. Gwyn found it at dawn on the slag heap above the lift, sitting bolt upright with its cupcake untouched and its cherries gone soft. It looked at him, then at the shaft, then back at him, and he understood he was meant to go down. He took the tin with him, and when the cage rang back an hour later, Dai was the first man off it, holding a cherry stone between his finger and thumb like a lucky coin.
