The cat came down to the harbour at Skerrow the week the herring boats were brought in, sitting on the coil of rope by the net shed as if she had paid for the stone. Nobody knew whose she was. She had a white face with two black dots for eyes, a red bow tied tight above one ear, and a pink pinafore that was never once dirty, which the women found more suspicious than anything.

Old Tam Greig, who had lost two brothers to the Minch and did not hold with animals in the wheelhouse, put her off the Nightjar three times. Three times she was back on the coil by morning, bow straight, paws tucked under her. On the fourth night the glass fell hard and the fleet was still out past the skerries, eleven boats, and the wind came round to the north-west with a sound like a train on the hill.
Tam went down to the slip with a lamp and found her already there, sitting at the water's edge, looking out. She did not mew. She stood, turned, and walked along the wet stones toward the point where the gulls were going up in a white rush, and he followed her because there was nothing else to do. At the end of the point she stopped and looked back at him with her small, surprised mouth, the way a child looks at a grown man who has been slow.
The boats came in at first light, all eleven, with the cold heavy in their holds. Tam never claimed the cat had saved them. He only said the bow on her head had been the brightest thing on the whole coast that night, and that when he got back to the net shed the coil of rope was empty, with a dry patch the size of a paw still keeping its shape on the wet wood.
