Small black and grey cartoon cat tattoo with large eyes and a striped tail, shown on the inner forearm against a white fur backdrop.

Cartoon cat on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small cartoon kitten with oversized round eyes sits upright with its striped tail curled around its body. The design uses fine black linework with grey shading on the fur and tail, and the ink is set against pale skin. The tattoo is centred on the inner forearm, with a blurred dark background and white fur behind the arm.

Third night running the kitten has come to the woodshed door, and third night I have pretended not to see it. Mrs Pargeter says it belongs to nobody, which is what she says about every wild thing that wants feeding. It sits on the step with its striped tail wrapped round its feet like a bell rope, staring up at the lamp with those enormous eyes, as though I am the one who ought to explain myself.

Today I followed its tracks past the stile where the beech wood starts. Nothing had been in the wood since the frost except the kitten, a fox, and a man from the Tanworth estate looking for a dog he lost in August. The kitten went ahead of me along the ditch, stopping at every root to look back, the way a clerk checks that the ledger is still on the desk. At the old boundary stone it stopped, sat up very straight, and would go no further.

I sat on the stone beside it. Between us there was only cold air and a scatter of wet bracken. I thought about the names in the parish book, the ones struck through when their owners moved away, and how little anyone writes down for a creature that only ever arrives. When I stood, it came with me, close at my heels, and I did not look back to see whether it was still there. I know it was. I can hear its tail brushing the step now, a small dry sound, like someone turning the pages of a book they have already read.
