Minimal cat outline on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a cat drawn as a single continuous black outline, showing only a head with pointed ears, two dot eyes, a striped tail curling to the left and a plain body. The linework is thin and sketchy with no shading, and the design is entirely black ink. It sits in the middle of a pale forearm with plenty of empty skin around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every morning the cat came down the cobbles of Saltcombe to sit at the end of the fish quay, its tail wrapped round its feet like a rope someone had forgotten to coil. Nobody owned it. The net mender said it had come in on the tide the winter the Mary Ann went down, and the baker said it had been on the quay longer than the crane, which was a lie, because the crane was older than anyone's grandmother.

Its ears were pointed as a gull's wing, and its two dot eyes never blinked at the boats going out. Old Tamsin Crane, who gutted herring for forty years, noticed that it only ever looked toward the open water when the wind was from the north. She said nothing to anyone until the spring the herring failed and the men were itching to sail regardless.

On the night before the boats were to go, the cat walked the full length of the quay and sat down in front of the wheelhouse of the Kestrel. It did not move when the men shouted. It did not move when Tamsin's grandson tried to lift it. So they stayed ashore, and in the morning the northerly came up hard and drove two boats onto the point where no one had ever come home.

Nobody thanked the cat. They left a dish of pilchards on the wall, and it ate them, and the next winter it was gone, the way cats go. Tamsin said it had only been doing what cats do, which is sit where they please and wait for the weather to make up its mind. Then she set out a dish every evening anyway.
