Cartoon cat with bow and glasses
Other · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a cartoon cat face wears a red bow on its head and black rounded glasses. The outline is thin and dark, the glasses are solid black, and the bow is filled with red ink. The image is a close, slightly soft photo against a plain skin background with white fabric at the top edge.

Now sit down, because my grandmother told this one standing up and never once sat, and look how it ended for her. Up on the stage at the Palais in Bexley Heath, every Saturday, there was a white cat with a red bow the size of a dinner plate and a pair of round black spectacles she'd got off a dead vicar's wife. She couldn't see a thing without them, mind, but she could read a dance card faster than any girl in Kent.

The band was a fiddler with a bad knee, a drummer with one good arm, and a piano that had lost two keys to a bet. The cat wanted the fiddler, and she wanted him every night. She'd take her glasses off, fold them, put them back on, and dance with him until the lights came up. Nobody asked her to choose. Nobody thought she'd have to.
Then one spring the fiddler's mother came in with a ledger and a face like a shut shop, and she slid it across the table and said, read the small print, love. So the cat did, every line, through those black lenses. At the bottom, in letters no bigger than a gnat's knee, it said she'd be dancing the rest of her days with nobody's feet but her own.
She took the glasses off, folded them neat, and left them on the piano lid. Then she walked out into the car park under the moon, bow bright as a cherry, and nobody saw her go. The fiddler found the spectacles in the morning and still plays with them on the bottom step by the bins. If you're ever in Bexley on a Saturday, you'll hear him at it.
