Hello Kitty tattoos across upper back

Back · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows the upper back of a person, with the head turned away from the camera. A central Hello Kitty wearing round glasses and a red bow sits within a garland of pink flowers and small teal stars, with a Hello Kitty holding a red heart on each side. The black outlines are bold and clean, with flat pink, red and green fills, and the tattoos are arranged symmetrically across the shoulder blades.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming off the canvas awning since seven, and by eleven Ruth had stopped pretending the cardboard box under the trestle was dry. She sorted the sticker sheets again anyway, because the boy from the cafe two stalls down had asked for the ones with the cat in the round glasses, and she had promised to keep one back.

The cat was the thing she had in stock least. Nobody bought the plain white ones any more. They wanted the cat with the red bow and the little apple, the cat with glasses, the cat with a heart held to her chest like a parcel. Ruth had three of the glasses cat left, each sheet curled at one corner from the damp. She flattened one against her palm and it stuck to the skin of her thumb, the pink flowers and the teal stars smudged but still there.

At half past eleven the boy came back, shaking water from his hood, and he didn't want the sticker at all. He wanted a pin, because his grandmother had lost her own years ago on a bus to Margate, and he had spent a month hunting for a replacement in every market from Deal to Dover. Ruth found one in the bottom of a biscuit tin, a tiny enamel cat with its bow picked out in red, the enamel chipped at one ear.

He paid in coins, all of them wet. She wrapped the pin in tissue, then in a paper bag, then in a second bag, because the rain was coming sideways now and she did not trust anything to stay dry in it. When he had gone she stood under the awning a while longer, watching the gutters fill, and found herself smiling at nothing, the way you do when a small thing has gone exactly where it was meant to.
