Cartoon cat with a pistol on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon cat with a large bow on its head stands at the centre of the design, with a pistol drawn at its left side. The outlines are smooth and even, with the figure left largely unshaded, while wavy grey shading fills the area beneath it. The photograph is greyscale, and the tattoo appears to be done in black ink on the inner forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nan Hester had run the shooting gallery on the pier at Herne Bay for thirty-one summers, and in all that time nobody had ever hit the cat. The target was a tin sign of a white cat in a red bow, its lacquer gone the colour of weak tea, and it sat at the back of the stall beside the bell that rang for a perfect score. Boys came with their fathers' confidence and left with fistfuls of coconut shies they had not wanted.

The autumn the pier was condemned, a stranger in a grey mac came in out of the drizzle and asked for a go. He paid in old pennies, which Hester took because she had taken them for thirty-one years. He held the pistol the way men hold things they have been told not to trust, lifted it, and the cat's bow shivered as the lamp swung. He did not fire. He asked her what the wavy blue lines along the bottom of the board were for. She said they were the sea, and the sea was always coming for the pier, and that was why you kept your sights low.

He came back every evening for a week, and each night the tide was higher on the piles. On the seventh he put down a biscuit tin full of letters, all addressed in the same looping hand to a woman called Dolores Vane, and asked Hester to post them when the boards came down. She read the top envelope, which was a list of apologies, and shut the tin. Then she loaded the pistol with the cork pellets she kept for children and slid it back across the counter.

He hit the cat in the bow on his first shot, and the bell rang out over the grey water. Hester taped the tin shut and put it under the counter, where it stayed until the last board went into the sea.
