Cartoon cat with yarn in a heart

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon kitten with a pink bow and pink ears bats a pink ball of wool with one paw, with its tail raised behind it. The cat sits inside a layered heart frame with a lilac centre, a teal inner panel, a yellow dotted line and a pink scalloped outer edge. Bold black outlines and flat, bright fills give the piece a graphic, cartoon look, with soft shading on the cat's fur.

The wool had been wound into a ball on Tuesday, and by Thursday it ran from Mrs Pilling's front window down Cobb Lane, under the bus shelter, and into the back of the bakery, where it looped twice round the proving drawers. Nobody had seen the kitten do it. Biscuit, as the baker called her, wore a pink bow from a christening and a pink collar from nobody in particular, and she liked to sit on the sill and watch the string go taut.

Mrs Pilling came in with her cardigan buttoned wrong and a pair of scissors in her fist. "She has ruined my heart," she said, holding up the cushion she had been stitching all week, a lilac heart with a teal middle and a scalloped pink edge. The yellow dotted stitching had come loose where the ball had rolled across it. Biscuit leaned out from behind the flour sacks, batted the pink ball once more with one white paw, and sent it skittering under the counter.

Tomasz sighed and offered a cinnamon knot as a truce. Mrs Pilling accepted the knot, then the scissors went down, and the two of them sat on upturned crates unpicking three days of string while the bread came out of the oven. By the time they finished, the kitten had gathered every stray thread into a neat pink heap and was asleep on top of it, tail twitching.

Mrs Pilling wound the wool onto her forearm and said the cushion would have to wait for a new heart. "Then make one that bats back," Tomasz said. She didn't answer, but on Friday a fresh ball sat on the sill, and Biscuit was already on it.
