Two cartoon portraits in rope frames on a leg
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
Two matching tattoos sit side by side on skin. Each shows a cartoon woman in a rope-edged oval, one with glasses and brown hair and the other with a dark bob, set against a orange sunrise and green hills. A flower with green leaves sits at the base of each frame. Bold black outlines, flat colour fills and a symmetrical layout give the pair a classic traditional feel.

The milk float was already rattling along the front when Ivy finally stopped dancing, her glasses steamed up and her cardigan knotted round her waist. The band had packed up hours earlier, but the caretaker let us stay on the sprung floor because he liked watching us attempt the jive in our stockinged feet.

We had our matching tattoos booked for the Monday, two rope frames with a sunrise and a flower at the bottom, the design drawn twice on one sheet of tracing paper by a man above the chip shop who kept a parrot called Duke. Ivy had chosen the glasses and I had chosen the bob, and we argued about the green hills until the artist said he would do them however he liked and send us the bill.
Ivy told me on the steps that she had a ticket for the early train to Glasgow, a job in a hotel kitchen and a cousin with a spare room. She said it like she was reading the shipping forecast. I said the sun was already coming up behind the pier, which was true, and that the flower would look daft on its own.
She laughed, then she didn't, and she pressed her palm flat against my hand the way you'd steady a jar of jam on a moving bus. Three weeks later the two frames still sit side by side in my head, the orange rays as bright as they were that morning, and I still haven't decided whether the empty space beside mine belongs to her or to me.
