The lift in Halewood House had been broken since the spring, so the cat took the stairs, all twelve floors, one paw at a time. Nobody in the block knew where she had come from. Mrs Okonedo said a removal van had left her behind. Mr Pell from number nine said the Council had sent her to count the damp. The children said she had come down from the stars, and since the children were the only ones who had ever seen her raise her hand, nobody argued with them.

She wore a blue jumper that Mrs Okonedo had stitched a yellow triangle onto, back when she still made costumes for the amateur dramatics group in the community hall. The cat had one rule. When something was wrong she lifted one hand, split two fingers, and said nothing at all. The old men on the bench outside took this for wisdom. When Pell's dog got into the bins, the cat raised her hand and the dog sat down in the gutter and stayed there until he was told he could move.
In February the water came up through the basement drains and filled the ground floor corridor to the skirting. Tenants gathered on the stairs with torches and argued about whose carpets were ruined and who had reported the leak in October. Nobody could agree on anything. The cat walked down to the lobby, sat on the bottom step in the cold water, and lifted her hand. For a long while no one moved. Then Pell, who had not spoken to Mrs Okonedo in eleven years, came down the stairs with a bucket and started bailing.
By morning the water had gone. The cat was back on the twelfth floor, her jumper dry, her whiskers combed flat. On the landing outside number four someone had left a saucer of milk and a note in careful capitals: LIVE LONG AND PROSPER. THE LIFT IS STILL BROKEN. LOVE, FLAT FOUR.
