Chibi cartoon cat in pinstripe suit on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A chibi-style cartoon cat with a brown quiff, blue pinstripe suit, red tie and red shoes stands centre frame, holding a teal-tipped gadget with small teal sparks beside it. The design uses bold black outlines with flat, solid fills and no shading. Colour dominates across the blue, red, brown and yellow, set against unmarked skin on the lower leg.

The cat came up the pass in the second week of snow, with a red tie knotted tight under its chin and a brown quiff the wind could not flatten. The shepherds at Caddan Gap had seen foxes and a lost priest, but never a cat in a pinstriped suit walking on its hind legs with a brass rod in one paw. It stopped at the inn and asked, politely, for a hot dish and a length of copper wire.

Mairi Dunphy, who kept the inn and trusted nothing that talked, gave it the wire because the thing paid in silver with a name stamped on every coin. Over three nights it mended the broken bell of the chapel, the pump in the yard, and a clock nobody had wound since the flood. Each repair ended with a tap of the brass rod against the metal and a crackle of teal sparks that smelled of rain on hot stone.
On the fourth night the pass iced over, and the carter's boy was out on the high road with the mules. Mairi went to the door expecting nothing. The cat was already there, shaking snow from its red shoes, its rod humming. "Left at the cairn," it said, "then keep the wind on your left cheek. You will reach the lamp." The boy came down at dawn, frostbitten and alive, and swore the cat had walked ahead of him the whole way, a small smart shape in blue stripes, never once looking back.
Nobody in Caddan Gap ever learned its name. The bell rang true for a hundred winters after, and whenever the pump coughed, someone in the village would say, tidy as a clerk, "Mind the cairn," and go out to see to the road.
