Hello Kitty in a kimono with cherry blossoms on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon Hello Kitty character wearing a dark kimono with pink sash and yellow flower patterns holds a green fan decorated with pink blossoms. Pink cherry blossoms with yellow centres and a few falling petals surround the character on a pale turquoise wash. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills give it a clean, cartoon look, shown across the upper arm and shoulder.

You have sat on the harbour wall since the morning ferry left, a folded green fan across your knees and your white ears turned towards the fish market. The cherry tree at the top of Crane Street dropped its petals onto the cobbles overnight, and now they stick to the wet stone like pressed coins. Mrs Okonedo at the chandlery says the tree is older than the breakwater. You believe her, because nothing on this coast is younger than it looks.

The trouble began with the fan. Your grandmother painted its face with three sprigs of pink blossom, each with a yellow heart, and gave it to you the winter the boats stopped going out. Every fan you have sold since has been a copy of that one, and every buyer asks where the dark kimono came from. You tell them it was silk, inherited, and you do not tell them you have never owned silk in your life.
On the third afternoon of the blossom a boy from the lifeboat station came running up the slipway with a torn sail under his arm. He wanted a fan mended, he said, because his father had taken one to sea and brought it back soaked. You opened it on the wall. The paint had run into the blossoms, pink into green, and beneath it the paper showed a tide chart from forty years ago, numbers you could not read and did not need to.
You gave him the fan anyway, sprigs and all, and told him the water had only washed the colour where it wanted to go. He ran off down the slip with it held over his head like a flag. By dusk the petals had lifted off the cobbles and gone out over the harbour mouth, and you realised you had been counting them, which is how you know you have stayed too long in one place.
