Colour tattoo on an upper arm of a cartoon beer bottle with a smiling face hugging a pink pig, with the word BEER on the label.

Beer bottle hugging a pink pig on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon beer bottle with a smiling face and bubbles hugs a smiling pink pig, with small radiating lines behind them. The bold outlines are black, and the bottle is shaded in dark brown with pink highlights, while the pig and label are filled in flat pink. The tattoo fills most of the frame on the upper arm, set against lightly freckled skin.

Dear Mam, we came in off the Dogger on Thursday with a full hold of plaice and a pig we didn't put on the manifest. He's called Porky, though Cook insists on Gerald, and he climbed up the gangway at Hull with his trotters going like a tap-dancer. Skipper says a pig at sea is bad luck, but the nets haven't torn once since he came aboard, so I reckon the luck has turned.

The bottle belongs to Skipper. It's a dark brown ale he bought for his brother's wedding and never got round to, and he keeps it wedged behind the galley stove like a sleeping dog. In the blow off Flamborough the whole boat tilted and the bottle went skidding across the deck towards the rail. Porky got there first. He threw his front legs round that bottle and held on through three hours of green water, grinning the whole time, and he didn't let go until the morning came up grey and the glass was still whole.

Skipper took one look at the two of them, the pig's arms wrapped round the bottle and the ale sloshing gently inside, and he didn't have the heart to open it. Now they sit on the wheelhouse step every evening, Porky with his eyes shut and the bottle propped against his shoulder like a mate who's had a long day. Cook says it's the nicest thing he's seen in thirty years at sea.

We're in again on Sunday. Tell Dad the bottle's still full, and tell him I've learnt more about friendship from a pig than from anyone I've met on land. Your loving son, Danny.
