Cartoon character tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a bald, orange-skinned cartoon figure with large round eyes, grey hair at the sides, a long pointed nose and a loose lilac robe with outstretched arms. Bold black outlines define the figure, with soft purple shading in the robe and a light green halo behind it. The design sits centrally in the frame on smooth skin with other tattoo work partly visible at the edges.

The boats had been out three nights when the robed man came walking up the shingle at Skerry Hythe, his arms held wide as if to show he carried nothing. Nobody in Ardcloan had seen him before. He had a long yellow nose that bent a little at the tip, eyes round as pennies, and a lilac gown that dragged through the wrack without getting wet. Old Mairi Cobb, who mended nets on the slip, said he was a stranger from the deep water and should be given bread. Her son Tam said he was a fool and should be sent home.

He stood on the harbour wall until the lamps were lit, and then he began to speak to the water. He told it the names of the men still at sea, one by one, the way a clerk reads out a ledger. The sea, which had taken two boats the winter before, went quiet beneath him. A green light rose around his shoulders like lamplight through frosted glass, and the gulls stopped crying.
Tam walked out to him in the cold with a fish basket on his hip, meaning to say something sharp. But the stranger turned, looked at his boots, and asked whether he had left a lamp burning in the window for the boats. Tam had not. He went back up the wall and lit one, and when the fleet came in at dawn with full holds, every man aboard swore the water had lain flat as a table the whole way home.
The robed man was gone by morning. Mairi found only a pair of wet footprints on the slip, and beside them a single net float, painted the same lilac as his gown.
