Cartoon character with speech bubble on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A bold cartoon woman in glasses and a red polka-dot bandana raises a fist inside a framed panel, with a speech bubble above her reading I'm a strong, smart, sensual woman. Thick black outlines define the figure, with smooth colour fills in teal, red, yellow and blue. The panel sits upright on the thigh, with a small line drawing partly visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

Nobody at Holbeck Print had asked for the slogan, and Gwen Okafor said so every time she walked past the proof pinned above the guillotine. The Tenants' Guild wanted a poster for the Saturday swap meet, something to pull shoppers off Hunslet Road, and Gwen drew a woman with round black glasses and a red spotted headscarf, one fist raised, because every committee she had ever sat on had a woman like that at the back, holding a biro and refusing to be patted on the head.

Dunphy, the Guild chairman, read the speech bubble twice on the proof and asked if it could be shorter. Gwen wrote the line out in capitals on the back of a cheese invoice, slid it across the counter and asked him which word he'd like to lose. He said nothing for a while, then wondered whether sensual would upset the church hall lot. 'It'll get them into the bus shelter,' Gwen said, 'which is as far as the church hall lot ever walks.'
On printing night the old press coughed twice and the blue for the sky bled into the cream at the edges. Ivy, the apprentice, wanted to run it again and waste the paper. Gwen held up a damp sheet, squinted at the smudge creeping over the bubble and said to leave it, because it looked like weather coming in over the mill chimneys, and nobody ever threw out a poster that looked like weather.
On Saturday morning a boy in a school blazer stopped outside the launderette and read the bubble aloud, tripping over sensual like a stair he hadn't counted. His nan took the bag of washing from his hand, read it once herself and went inside to ask for a second copy. By noon the fist was pinned in three shop windows, and the one in the launderette had already gone soft at the corners from the steam.
