Cartoon clown in fries underwear on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon clown with bright red hair and a white painted face stands shirtless with a defined muscular torso. The figure wears red underwear printed with french fries, and the design is drawn with bold black outlines and flat areas of red and yellow. The tattoo sits on a hairy thigh, filling most of the frame against plain skin.

The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gate by four o'clock, and the Hollin Fell Inn had nothing left in its larder but a jar of pickled onions and a sack of potatoes. You are behind the bar with a tea towel over your shoulder when the door bangs open and a clown comes in, stamping slush off enormous red shoes. His hair is a fire in the lamplight and his painted grin is wider than his face. He wears no coat, only a pair of red pants printed with chips, and he carries an empty cardboard tray as if it were a passport.

"Two rooms," he says gravely, "a hot bath and a fork."

You tell him the only free room is the attic, which is cold enough to keep milk. He considers this with his whole painted face, then throws back his head and laughs until the glasses rattle on the shelf. Within the hour he has peeled the sack of potatoes at your kitchen table, sliced them into sticks as thick as your thumb, and fried them in the pan you use for eggs, humming the whole time. The inn smells better than it has in years. You eat three helpings standing up, and he eats the rest sitting on the bar, swinging his red shoes.

In the morning the wind has dropped and the sky is a hard blue over the fell. The clown is gone. On the bar stands the cardboard tray, still faintly warm, with a note in red felt pen: Pay me back in potatoes. Outside, the lane has been cleared to the gate, and a single line of footprints leads away from the door, each one shaped like a pair of very large shoes.
