The bell of Ostermere had not rung since the spring fair, and the Royal Council blamed the ferryman, which is how Alderic Pumble came to be standing knee-deep in the reed-cutters' ditch at dawn. He wore his good teal smock with the pink blossoms, because his wife had washed the only other one and he would not be seen in grey before the Chancellor. His white cap sat square on his head, as it always did, and it was the only thing about him that had not yet got wet.

The bell was not in the ditch. It was in an alder above it, wedged in a heron's nest the size of a cartwheel, and the heron was not pleased to have company. Alderic told it politely that he was on the King's business. The heron told him, in the language of herons, that the King could fetch his own bell. They negotiated for most of an hour. In the end Alderic climbed the tree with his cap held between his teeth, prised the clapper loose with a spoon, and dropped the bell into the crown of the cap, where it landed with a deep and satisfied note.
He walked back through the town with the bell held out in front of him like a loaf. Children ran alongside. The Chancellor met him at the gate, looked at the bell, looked at the cap, and asked why there were three speckled eggs and a frog sitting in the brim. Alderic considered the question for some time. Then he rang the bell, very loudly, and the whole kingdom looked up, and not one of them asked about the frog.
