There's a jar on the top shelf of the sluice room that nobody's allowed to touch. Glass, with a cork gone brown as toast, and inside there's a blue creature about the size of your hand, grinning like it's just heard the best joke in the county. Arms up, as if it's waiting for someone to lift it out and dance. The porters say it arrived with the old wing's furniture. Pathology swears it was never theirs.

Bronwen got the cork out at three in the morning, meaning only to wipe the shelf. The creature crept to the rim, looked at her with those narrow eyes, and let a pale slick run down the glass like candle wax. She swore it said "Oi", and we all laughed until the corridor lights blinked off, every one of them, and the monitors on Nine went quiet for the length of a held breath. When the lights came back the cork was in again, and nobody on the rota could remember who'd done it.

So when the new lad asks why the sluice door stays locked, I tell him the truth. Keep your tea hot, your trolley quiet, and never let the grinning thing out before the day shift has signed in.
