Pikachu painting at an easel

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon Pikachu sits beside an easel, brush raised, painting a greyscale version of itself on the canvas. A grey paint pot and a green bottle with a red star label sit on the ground in front. The bold black outlines and smooth colour shading in yellow, red and green give the piece a neo-traditional look, and the easel frames the subject centrally against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Hartlepool had seen a painter drink on the job before, so Mrs Okonedo at the frame shop assumed the yellow fellow was a tourist. He arrived on the 9.14 with a folding easel, a tin of grey and a green bottle he kept inside his coat, and set up outside the chip shop as if the pavement had been waiting for him. He did not speak. He pointed at the canvas, then at the sea, then at the pot, and the gulls went quiet in a way Mrs Okonedo later described as respectful.

The council had commissioned a mural of the harbour for the new car park wall. What they got instead was a small self-portrait, rendered entirely in grey, perfectly accurate in every detail except the expression, which looked pleased with itself. Councillor Dunmore rang the local paper to complain. The editor came down to look, and by lunchtime half the town had gathered to watch a cartoon creature with a lightning-bolt tail paint himself in monochrome, brush lifted, with the quiet dignity of a man who had never once been asked to justify his choices.

On the third day the grey version began to fade at the edges while the real one grew brighter, and the chip shop owner swore the bottle was lower than it had been at breakfast. Dunmore stopped ringing. The editor wrote a column that nobody read to the end. On the fourth morning the easel was gone, the pot was dry, and the wall held only a single grey paw print at the height of a child's hand, with a smear of green beside it.

The council sealed the print under lacquer and put up a plaque reading Local Artist, Unknown. Mrs Okonedo still leaves a saucer of milk on the step each evening, just in case he comes back to finish the mural.
