Hello Kitty face with glasses and red bow

Mixed · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty face is outlined in bold black linework, with black-framed glasses, small blue gems on the arms of the glasses and a yellow-green nose. A large red bow sits at the top right of the head. The design is filled with flat colour and sits centrally in a tight close-up frame.

She arrives every morning at ten past four, white as a dusted tray, with a red bow tied at one ear and a pair of thick black spectacles she never seems to need. She settles on the flour bin and watches you weigh out the salt with the patience of a librarian who has seen every overdue book in town.

The trouble starts on a Thursday. The cinnamon tin goes missing, and the order book, which you left open at the page for Saturday's wedding cake, now carries a fresh line in careful capitals: TWELVE, NOT TWO. You check your sums twice. You were right the first time. The cat blinks at you over her frames and taps the page with one paw until you admit that the sums are not the only thing you have been getting wrong.

At half five the first customer knocks, and you slide the sourdough out of the oven, its crust crackling like a struck match. When you turn round, the flour bin is empty apart from a small red bow folded neatly on the sack, and beside it the cinnamon tin sits with its lid off, exactly where it should be. You put the bow in the till drawer, and the next morning you weigh out twelve portions of everything.
