Totoro with acorn in watercolour style
Other · Colour · Photo
A large grey Totoro sits at the centre with a tan belly and an acorn resting on its head. Two smaller Totoro figures in pale blue and grey appear at the left and right edges. Loose watercolour washes and dark ink outlines give a painterly finish, with blue and green tones alongside the tan.

I had an acorn, one I'd pocketed in September from the oak by the winding gear, and I set it on our step the night the last cage came up empty.

The wood ran up behind the spoil heap, and the coal dust never reached it. From my bedroom window you could see its edge, greens bleeding into blue where the rain had got at them, like somebody had painted it and then let the water have its way. Dad had worked the face for twenty-six years and never once walked up there. He said the trees on that hill were too clean to trust.
In the morning the acorn had gone. The biscuit was still sitting there, untouched, and the tea had gone cold in its flask, but on the top of the heap where the slag was blackest there was a green shoot no higher than my wrist, with two leaves held out flat like hands asking for something.
Dad stood at the gate with his bait tin and looked at it for a long time. Then he said, quietly, "Well, one of us has managed to come up," and went off to the job centre without his tea. I fetched a jam jar and a spoon from the kitchen and climbed the heap to give it some water.
