Finn and Jake from Adventure Time on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon characters are tattooed on a lower leg: Finn, in a white hat and blue outfit holding a green sword, and Jake, a yellow dog, shown at a lower angle beside him. The bold outlines are clean and the flat fills use bright colours with simple shading. The photo is taken from a close angle on a tiled floor, with shoes and a sock visible in the background.

Jake had been stretching his legs for twenty minutes, which for a dog his size meant he had reached the far end of the marquee and come back twice. Finn stood at the altar end with his sword strapped to his back, trying to look like a best man instead of a boy who had lost a ring. The ring was in Jake's mouth. It had been in Jake's mouth since the vicar asked for it.

"Give it here, buddy," Finn whispered, crouching so the hem of his blue tunic dragged on the grass. Jake's eyes slid over to the bride's aunt, who was holding a tray of sausage rolls, and his tail thumped twice against a chair leg. Finn knew that thump. It was the thump that had once got them into a cave full of wolves and out again with a cake.

"Dude," Finn said. "Rings aren't snacks."

Jake considered this, then pushed the gold band across the lawn with his nose, past the flower girls, under a trestle table, and straight into a puddle that had been gathering all afternoon from a leaking gutter. The guests turned round. Finn lunged, slid, and came up with the ring held high like a trophy, dripping, while Jake sat neatly on his haunches and wagged.

The vicar, after a long breath, cleared his throat and said the ring was still perfectly good. Finn slid it onto the bride's finger himself, then leaned down to his friend. "Next time," he muttered, "you're carrying the cake." Jake barked once, which everyone took as a yes.
