Cartoon girl and zombie boy on two feet
Other · Mixed · Photo
Two cartoon characters are tattooed across the tops of a pair of feet. A pigtailed girl with large dark eyes holds a thin leash that runs across to a grey-skinned zombie boy with his tongue out on the other foot. The outlines are clean and the shading is soft, with a mix of pale skin tones, grey and small areas of red and blue.

Nobody in Millbrook Cross had ever asked why Ottilie Vane walked a zombie on a string, mostly because they had all seen Edmund do his best to bite the postman and then apologise with a bag of wine gums. He shuffled behind her every Tuesday, one arm hanging loose, tongue out of the side of his mouth like a dog that had found a hot puddle. The lead was a length of fishing line she had bought at the tackle shop on the harbour, tied to his wrist with a bow she redid whenever it came loose.

The trouble started in March, when the council decided the cemetery gates needed painting and sent a man called Rhys up the ladder with a tin of primer. Edmund wandered over to watch. He stood very still beneath the ladder, his grey face tipped upward, and Rhys, who had never been afraid of anything in his life, came down the rungs faster than he had gone up them. Ottilie found Edmund standing in the wet paint, looking pleased with himself, and she sighed the sigh of a girl whose day had been planned out to the minute.
She cleaned his shoes with a cloth from her apron pocket and told him he could not frighten grown men any more. Edmund considered this. Then he reached out, very gently, and took the brush from Rhys's abandoned tin and drew a small crooked star on the gatepost, the same shape as the one he wore stitched to his sleeve.
By summer the star had become a sort of sign for the town. People left sweets on the wall beside it, and the gardeners stopped trimming the ivy there. Ottilie kept the line taut and walked on, and nobody thought to ask who was leading whom.
