Two robot characters are tattooed side by side on the lower legs. The pink robot has a heart above its head, a flower on its chest and a dotted outline, while the grey robot wears a top hat and has a red heart on its chest. Bold black outlines and flat fills in pink, teal, red and blue sit against a dark background, giving a clear, graphic composition.

Nobody in Fenmoor Crossing could agree on who had built the two tin dancers, only that they arrived on the carrier's cart the week before the harvest supper. One was painted rose-pink, with a copper spring for an antenna and a little red heart bobbing on a wire above it. The other was the grey of wet slate and wore a black top hat that had been left behind by a travelling magician.

The hall had a fiddler called Old Pritchard who could never keep time, so every Saturday the young men stood on the boards waiting for a tune that would never come straight. The robots took the floor instead. Mab clicked her heel and her heart lit up like a coal. Tobias bowed so low his hat rolled off, the girls laughed, and the boys stopped being shy.

Then the bellows split one night in February and the hall went dark. There was no light but the two hearts, one pink and one red, swinging above the crowd. Pritchard, who had never danced in his life, lifted his cap and hummed a waltz with no notes in it. Mab held out her copper hand. Tobias took it with his own, and they turned the length of the floor until the boards grew warm under them.

By morning the fiddler was gone and the robots stood by the door as though nothing had happened, the flower pinned crooked on Mab's chest and the hat back on its hook. Nobody ever swept the hall again. The village says that when the wind blows from the east you can still hear them tapping out a polka on the floorboards, and if you look at the door you will find one grey hat turned to face the other.
