Small maneki-neko lucky cat on wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a small seated maneki-neko, the beckoning lucky cat, with a white body, pink paw pads and cheeks, a blue collar with a red ribbon, and an orange coin held against its chest. Dark outlines are thin and even, with simple flat fills and no shading. The design is centred on pale, slightly blurred skin with a soft, out-of-focus background.

The cat had been on the windowsill of the Brine Street boarding house since before anyone could remember, its raised paw faded to the colour of weak tea. You noticed it the week the new lodger arrived, a retired ferryman called Mr Oakes who paid for his room in coins he counted twice. He always stopped to look at the little ceramic beckoner, and one wet Tuesday he told you it had been the landlady's mother's, and that it only ever worked for people who meant to stay.

You didn't believe him. You were nineteen and certain that luck was something the wind carried in from the harbour, not something you could keep on a sill. But the rent was overdue, the gas meter was empty, and Mrs Pargeter had started leaving notes on the stairs in capitals. So when Mr Oakes went down with his bad chest in February and never came back up, you took the coin from the cat's lap, the orange one with the square hole in the middle, and you found his ledger tucked behind the clock.
The ledger held sixty years of debts that had been forgiven in pencil, each one a name and a date and a single word: returned. Yours was on the last page, already written, in a hand you knew was his. Underneath it he had drawn a small cat with its paw lifted high, and beneath the paw a line that read, plainly, Go on, then.
You went down to the kitchen and paid Mrs Pargeter in full, in coins, counting them twice.
