Cartoon gloved hands forming a red heart on foot

Other · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon-style pair of gloved hands is outlined in black and curls around a solid red heart on the top of the foot. The linework is bold and even, and the red fill is the only colour in the design. The foot is photographed from the side against a dark floor, with the trouser hem and black platform heels visible.

The gloves came up the lane on the last Tuesday of October, folded inside a tinker's sack with a debt slip pinned to the cuff. Old Pim Harrow had owed my mother eleven shillings since the spring thaw, and when he died in his cart outside the Fox, the only thing he left against the debt was a pair of white cotton gloves, the fingers stitched wide enough for a child. I had no use for them, so I put them in the drawer with the thimbles and forgot them.

The forest starts at the bottom of our orchard, and in the first week of November the Ashby girl went in after wood pigeons and came back without her tongue, or so her mother swore. She would not speak at the table. She only lifted her hands, pressed the palms together and curled the fingers round a space in the air, then looked at us as though we ought to know what it meant. Nobody did, until I opened the drawer and saw the gloves had gone soft and grey, the stitching loose at the wrist.

I pulled them on, and they fitted my hands better than they ever fitted Pim's. When I made the same shape, the girl laughed, a sound like a dropped spoon, and walked straight to the back door. The forest was waiting there, not in the trees but in the gap between them, where the bracken had been trodden into a path nobody had walked before. She followed it, and I followed her, both of us holding our hands together round nothing at all.

We came back at dusk. The gloves hung on the nail by the stove, and across the hearth someone had pressed a red heart into the flour sack with a thumb.
